Sail Without a Tiller
Page 30 of the July issue of Sailing magazine (with Sunfish champs on the cover, now on newsracks) has a detailed article on how to sail by changing only the position of the crew, without touching the tiller. This might be a fun skill for juniors to develop in order to enhance their feel for boat handling.
Advanced Racing Clinic Has 48 Sailors
The Advanced Racing Clinic got off to a great start Saturday morning as 48 sailors arrived at Stamford Yacht Club. They were surprised to find their usual assembly area on the front lawn populated with tents filled with sleepy SYC familes who had camped out at the club Friday evening. But by 9:30 the tents were packed up, the lawn was filled with Lasers and the C420s were in line at the hoist.
Clinic chairman Dave Gurney welcomed the sailors (one had come down from Maine and two sailed over from LI) and introduced the coaches (Danny Pletsch, Derek Veranizen, John Storck III, Zach Brown and Erik Storck). Coach Pletsch recalled how the spirit of his friend Nathan Cowen is memorialized annually at this clinic and how Cowen's life exemplified his love of sailing and sportsmanship.
Then everyone went into the club for some chalk-talk before heading out on the water on a perfect summer day without a cloud in the sky and a steady, light breeze from the southwest.
Many of the sailors at the clinic are tuning up for the Law Trophy Regatta on Monday at Indian Harbor Yacht Club. Look for some of them to be in the top ranks at the Law awards ceremony.

June 29th Update
Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Advanced Racing Clinic at Stamford Yacht Club. Be sure to be ready and rigged by 9 a.m. to make sure the day starts on time. Also, be sure to finalize any housing or docking arrangements you may need to make.
-A replay of today's America's Cup race can be seen on the Versus network starting at 6 p.m. A ripped sail doomed the ETNZ team.
-Finally we hope that everyone had a great first week of classes if your program began this week and don't hesitate to e-mail or call the JSA office if you have any questions.

Workshops Start Out the Year With a Bang
Over the last week, our club's instructor's have spent their time at highly regarded JSA clinics learning how to better serve our sailors. At the Head Instructor workshop, Seawanhaka's Alicia Martorella led a clinic where all the H.I.'s learned tips from each other on how to run a smooth program. Just a couple of days later, Tine Moberg-Parker led a fun and informative Opti Clinic for new instructors helping them to learn the ins and outs of teaching our youngest sailors. Finally on Wednesday, more than 200 instructors gathered for the annual All Instructor Workshop, which was once again a resounding success. Some the great speakers at the workshop included Dave Perry, Brett Viehman, Wes and Lynn Oliver and Amanda Callahan. Look for full articles on each event in the next issue of the Ditty Bag.
